Suicide Detection and Prevention, 8 hours

This course examines overcoming obstacles to preventing suicide in facilities and offers the facts behind many of the myths that surround this cause of death. Experience shows that almost all jail or juvenile facility suicides are preventable. Facts and prevention strategies focus on defining the elements of detention life that are conducive to suicide as well as pre-disposing factors of suicidal behavior. Participants learn methods of assessment and practice communication skills to deter suicidal behavior. Class closes with an examination of the Command Risk Matrix Model and issues of liability.
