Issues for Armed POs, 8 hours

STC: 0920-080100

This course addresses vital workplace considerations as probation departments begin to create more armed positions. Beginning with a review of your department’s own policy & procedures regarding armed officers and liability concerns, the focus is providing useful insight to officers about the reality of carrying a firearm. The key focus areas are the moral/ethical concerns, the psychological impact of carrying/using a firearm, plus the civil liability for POs. Scenarios are used to encourage thoughtful discussion while developing contingency planning skills. The possible effects of being involved in an on-duty critical incident and the psychological preparations for such an incident are covered. All armed officer skills are perishable: this course is a solid refresher for experienced armed officers. It is a vital course for officers with less experience to gain and reinforce skills needed to conduct their jobs safely and professionally.
