Addiction can be puzzling, and this class helps staff “break the code.” Participants use Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills to engage the probationer in recovery as you partner with treatment programs in holding them accountable and motivating them to get and stay “clean and sober.” Participants learn to use a simple screening tool to determine possible substance addiction/abuse. Utilize a symptoms chart to identify relapse signs early. Staff also learn to integrate the Stages of Change model (Tools of the Trade). Staff learn the 12-Step culture, relapse prevention techniques, and the value of debriefing a relapse as a learning experience for the probationer. Practice these skills with case studies and get feedback.
