Analytical Report Writing Skills, 8 hours

STC: 0920-071656, Full course update summer, 2016

The probation officer’s evaluation is the most essential section of the probation report, and it can be challenging to write. Participants are reminded that the evaluation section requires more than repeating information from other sections of the report. It is the only place where the writer offers his/her professional opinions and judgments. This course helps staff “connect the dots” that lead logically to an appropriate and persuasive recommendation. What information should be kept in the evaluation section and what information should be left out also is also covered. Staff learn that less is more when making a convincing argument, but most importantly, staff learn how analytical writing style works and how to build this style of writing on the sentence level. The mystery is removed and skills are honed. Grammar and mechanics review occur as well.
