The most common and sharpest professional tool the Probation Correctional
Officer (PCO) has is his/her ability to communicate effectively and engage in
support for the youth in pro-social activities. Increasingly, youth are afflicted with mental disorders that can be very perplexing to staff. This four-hour course teaches PCOs how to recognize when it is necessary to refer an incarcerated youth to a medical or mental health care professional. Learners identify the signs and symptoms of mentally disordered youth that necessitate referral for the appropriate medical and mental health level of care.
