This already solid course benefits from additional, new content and now provides participants with the “hands-on” experiences that create genuine expertise that assists in supervision, equips the participant in investigations, and supports the officer in delivering better courtroom testimony. Activities include hands-on opportunities to learn how substances are being consumed as participants practice with needles, learn how to make and use a base cocaine pipe, cut, weigh, package, and simulate the administration of drugs and more. Participants also learn to identify and recognize drugs being currently abused including stimulants, opiates, hallucinogens, cannabis and dissociative anesthetics and the increasing use of synthetic forms of these drugs. The focus is on emerging patterns of use and the physical and cognitive signs and symptoms of people who use or are under the influence of drugs. The course also includes discussions on the reasons behind drug use and how AB109, Proposition 47, and Proposition 64 may have impacted both drug use and treatment.
